Read this passage:
In the 1980s, the so-called "Western" tradition of computer
role-playing games, or CRPGs, began to differ dramatically
from Japanese role-playing games, or JRPGs, which were
often manufactured for consoles rather than for personal
computers. Whereas the CRPG tends to emphasize
freedom, customizability, and immersion in the mechanics
of a living, breathing world, the JRPG puts more emphasis
on story, characters, and cinematics. These distinctions
between the RPGs of Japan and the RPGs of North
America and Europe persisted throughout the 1990s and
the 2000s.
