Seeing as this is the most common practice among new parents, skin-to-skin contact is extremely important for both mother/father and baby. I believe this is also why newborns are placed in their mother's arms almost immediately after birth--seeing as it's a bonding experience for mother, it's also beneficial to baby as the mother and baby exchange sensory information that "stimulates and elicits “baby” behavior" (ie. staying calm, breathing more naturally, staying warm, maintaining body temperature and blood sugar).
