There were two ways that helped the immigrants in the 1800's and early 1900's retain their cultures. First is through cultural pluralism where the immigrant gets to keep their ethnic identity, converse in their language, live and stay in their ethnic group, retain their ways of life while they are in the American society. The other way was through Assimilation which is shedding of their traditional practices and languages and adopt the American life.

Enclaves were immigrants all living together in a specific area and continuing to practice traditions in their own cultures despite being in America. They were helping to retain their normal practices by staying together and living in an area that adopts a different country's culture. Think Chinatone-esque.
