It is true that as a general rule, collective nouns such as family, class, faculty, audience take singular verbs.
You would also say - The police is investigating the crime.
Although you can use these kinds of nouns in the plural form, when you are referring to its members individually, and not to the whole group, usually singular verbs are used.
