These fragments are called the Okazaki fragments.
DNA synthesis takes place from 3' to 5' end. However due to 5' and 3' polarity. The replication has to be discontinuous due to the synthesis happening backwards and okazaki fragments being formed.
The discontinuous aspect of replication of DNA in vivo is caused by the 5' to 3' polarity restriction.
The 5' to 3' polarity restriction is an indication of the carbon number on the ribose or deoxyribose sugars of nucleic acid where nucleotide polymerization can occur.
Due to this polarity restriction, the lagging strand (3' to 5') of the DNA cannot be synthesized continuously like the leading strand (5' to 3') but in short fragments known as Okazaki fragments.
The fragments are later joined together by an enzyme known as DNA ligase to complete the replication process.
