The Bureau of labor statistics provides employment statistics. In its calculations, the Bureau defines an unemployed person as a jobless individual who has been actively soliciting for employment in the last four weeks. Employment statistics are released monthly.

Jobless individuals who have given up the search for employment or those who have taken a break are not considered as unemployed. The Bureau does not include jobless people taking care of the sick and the elderly at home, as unemployed. Therefore, the formula used by the Bureau omits a certain percentage of jobless people in the calculation of the unemployment rate.
