At times yes but then again it depends what type of artwork you are making. A portrait is a good example as the rule of thirds helps centre the figure with balance and beauty. Same with a landscape. Anything that is painting mimisis can be applied to rule of thirds but abstract art goes against this with forms and shapes being wherever they want to be on the canvas without any lines suggesting where they should or should not be.
