The relationship between two variables is positive when an increase/decrease in value of one leads to a corresponding increase/decrease in the value of the other, and the relationship between two variables is negative when an increase in one leads to a corresponding decrease in the other and vise versa.
Put in simpler terms, we can say that if 2 variables have a positive relationship, what happens to one is what happens to the other, and when 2 variables have a negative relationship, the opposite of what happens to one is what happens to the other.
