Answer: The Aztec's religion also caused their downfall. When Hernan Cortes arrived in Mexico the Aztec Emperor, Moctezuma 2, thought he was a God. Hernan Cortes took this chance to capture the emperor and to kill him. This caused chaos and disorder in the empire which helped the Spanish defeat the Aztecs.

Answer:

It´s an amazing irony of history, all the three greatest native civilizations of the Americas believe in a prophecy that heralded its tragic fate. The Aztec civilization was not an exception. The Aztecs worshipped a powerful divinity they called Quetzatcoalt, the Feathered Serpent (la Serpiente Emplumada),  the god of wind, air and learning, the god that had brought civilization and who had taught men agriculture. He had stayed for a long time among men, but one day he departed to the East. Before doing so, he promised to come back one day with his people, he would come from the East. So, when the Spanish arrived from Europe (to the East of the Americas), emperor Moctezuma and his priests believed that they were Quetzatcoatl´s people. This belief helped the Spanish  gain the trust of Moctezuma and his court and even enter Tenochtitlán , the splendid Aztec capital. It proved to be a fatal mistake.
