Sending a busy manager a long email represents a problem in the decoding part of the communication process, caused by the sender.

The communication process is organized as follows:

  1. A sender encodes a message (i.e. transforms a thought into a sendable format, such as words or morse code) creates a message.
  2. The message is conveyed through a channel of communication (speaking, writing, video, body language, etc.).
  3. The receiver, or target of the communication, gets the message.
  4. The receiver decodes the message (i.e. processes it into understanding).
  5. In some cases, the receiver gives the sender feedback.

In the case of a long email sent to a busy manager, the receiver (the manager) will have trouble understanding what really is important in the message because his time constraints will lead him/her to read through the email very quickly in an attempt to identify the main points. When communicating, the sender should always take the receiver into account. For example, if you send a message in a language your receiver does not understand, the message fails in the decoding phase.

Since this problem was a mistake on the sender's part, you could also say that it occurred as early as the sender part of the communication process.
