When a flower has both a stigma and an ovary, it has both components in order to pollinate itself. However, if it only has an ovary, it must be pollinated by pollen from the stigma of another flower.

~ Cross-pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anther of one flower to the stigma of another flower on a different individual of the same species.
