A wise man is responsible for assisting the hero on his journey in a quest story

According to Joseph Campbell, a literature professor, there are stages to the plot of a hero's quest. He coined a total of 12 steps for making the plot of a hero's journey. One of the steps is 'Meeting the Mentor'.The hero wants to go on an adventure but he can't complete his quest without proper training and knowledge. If he does so, he will either be lost midway or will start on a path completely different than his initial path.
The mentor or the wise man will enter and provide his sheer wisdom, skillset and motivation to help the hero achieve his goal without dying or deviating.A mentor can be in any form apart from a wise old man. It can be a supernatural being or an object.
