Respuesta :

They went to Europe in the hopes of convincing other world powers to recognize the new United States as a country and to form allies who could assist in the revolution.

Explanation:

  • Both of them, especially Franklin was pretty active in convincing France to support colonists.
  • As a representative of the Pennsylvania Parliament in 1757 he went to England to persuade William Penn, the proprietor of Pennsylvania, to allow the colonial parliament to tax his own arable land.
  • The real goal was to persuade the British government to remove the Pen family from the place of the owner of Pennsylvania and to turn the colony into a royal province.
  • In London he met the most important people in Britain, and therefore the whole world.
  • In 1776, Congress sent him to Europe as his representative in the negotiations with France for the recognition of colonial independence. He skillfully manipulated the French, who gave him not only the recognition of a new republic, but also some credit for the development of America.
  • Then he became one of the most popular figures of his time. His character was on medallions, boxes of sweets, the backs of mirrors and the like. He introduced himself to the French as a simple "American peasant" in a brown-and-white suit of cheap linen and a fur coat. Notwithstanding the fact that such an "unsightly" came to the most luxurious court in Europe, the French aristocracy was delighted.
  • Although he suffered great pain from gout and kidney stones, Franklin successfully controlled his closest associates and set US diplomacy at a whole new level. It first secured military and diplomatic alliances with France in 1778 and then played a key role in reaching a final peace treaty with Britain in 1783.
