Meninges may be defined as the layer of the connective tissue that covers the brain and spinal cord. The meninges get develop from the neural crest cells and helps in the development of central nervous system.

The three main layers of the meninges of brain and spinal cord are dura matter, pia matter and arachnoid matter. The dura matter of the brain has two layers meningeal and osteal. The spinal cord dura matter has single layer known as meningeal. The epidural space is present in the meninges of the spinal coed and this space is absent in brain.
