Explanation:

Stained glass windows were a very popular technique practice in Europe during the Gothic period and the Renaissance. It is often related to the windows of churches and religious buildings. Gothic cathedrals are filled with stained glass windows, and Gothic architecture was closely tied to these windows, as the buildings were designed to fit more and more of them. In churches, artists used stained glass windows to depict images of the bible, as most of the people were illiterate and couldn't read at the time. So this was a way for the common people to get familiar with the stories of the bible, and basically they were intended for all people to understand. These images are made with individual pieces of glass that are put together on a frame to create the desired image, and then the individual colored pieces of glass were painted in order to add additional details to the images. In regards to the cost, this technique was cheaper and allowed to replace the thick, dark walls of cathedrals with thin tall walls of windows, however the purpose of them was not to "illuminate" the cathedral but rather to control the light coming in.
