Literacy tests were used around the 18th and 19th century as part of the voter registration process in southern states of the U.S. Along with poll taxes, residency and property restrictions and extra-legal activities (violence and intimidation) were all used to deny suffrage to African Americans. This violates the principles of a democratic society as African Americans were treated unfairly regarding the voting registration process and creating inequality. literacy tests would violate the principles of a democratic society as they were intended to disenfranchise (to deprive one’s right to vote) racial minorities.
