This reaction releases a large amount of CoA which cannot diffuse out of cells. Some acetoacetic acid is converted into beta-hydroxybutyric acid and acetone. The acetoacetic acid, beta-hydroxybutyric acid and acetone are collectively known as ketone bodies and the process of their formation is called ketogenesis.
