An African-American cultural organization of the 1920s and 1930s, focusing on Harlem, which celebrated black culture, black voice, and black lifestyles.

What is Harlem Renaissance?

The Harlem Renaissance was a golden age for African American artists, writers, and artists.

It gave these artists pride and control over how black knowledge was represented in American culture and set the stage for a human rights movement.

Black-nationalist and Pan-Africanism leader Marcus Garvey was born in Jamaica but moved to Harlem in 1916 and began publishing the influential Negro World newspaper in 1918.

His shipping company, the Black Star Line, established trade between African Americans, in the Caribbean, South and Central America, Canada, and Africa.

Garvey is probably best known for founding the Universal Negro Improvement Association, or UNIA, which promoted the “different but equal” status of African ancestors in order to establish Black countries around the world.

Thus, the Harlem Renaissance is the biggest change that happened between the end of the nineteenth century and 1930.
