- In 1497, Vasco da Gama embarked on a voyage that was crowned the next year by sailing to Calicut on the Indian coast. Spice-rich islands were soon found in the hands of the Portuguese, and along the coasts of Africa and India, they established their forts alongside settlements of Portuguese merchants, colonies.
- Lisbon became a major European port, but when English, Spanish and Dutch traders joined the trade with India, Portugal was pushed out as a trading competitor, so the success achieved by creating colonies was short-lived and very detrimental to Portugal.
- In 1500, Portuguese seafarer Pedro Cabral discovered the new world, a country now called Brazil. In doing so, the discoveries in the west led to a dispute with Portugal as the Portuguese sailed to Brazil before the Spaniards.
