Tundra is a type of vegetation. a set of plant communities of cold, mostly Arctic areas north of the taiga, to the limit of eternal snow and ice.
It extends over vast areas around the North Pole in Eurasia and North America, much less in the Antarctic region. In Eurasia alone, it covers approximately 3.25 million km².
The cold climate and the short growing season hinder the growth of the trees, so the appearance of the tundra is given by various low shrubs and herbaceous flowering plants and mosses and lichens.
Only in the transition area do individual types of taiga trees penetrate differently deep into the tundra.
