The natural resources available, language and military power, helped to shape the different civilizations in America. The most important civilizations in America were the Maya, Aztec and Inca. The three of them have different circumstances that helped their development.  

Aztecs: in 1150 the circumstance of the fall of the Toltec Empire help the Aztecs to develop their empire.  

Mayas: the different climates helped Mayas agriculture in the production of different crops. as they were strong military they did not have a vast land compared to Incas or Aztecs but were successful to protect the region of the Yucatan peninsula and central America.

Incas: The circumstance that is most relevant was the speaking of Quechua for all the habitants of the Andes helped to the grow of the empire.

How were a relatively small number of Spanish able to conquer the Aztecs?  

The main explanation is given by the immune system of the natives was not prepared for the diseases carried by the Spanish. Second the military technology of the Spanish was more developed. Third regarding the Aztecs they have a woman that acted as translator called Malinche that guided the Spanish across the Tenochtitlan helping Hernan Cortez to conquer the Aztecs.

  • Trade in Benin of commodities like pepper, stone beads, ivory and slaves in the late 1400s brought Christianism to Ethiopia.

  • The trade of slaves, salt, gold and ivory developed routes across the Sahara.  
  • The Songhai kingdom became the largest West African kingdom as it had a surplus of ivory and iron.
