The inner membrane of the mitochondria is folded to increase surface area for the larger number of protein complexes involved in the Krebs cycle of cellular respiration.
Explanation:
One of the important transmembrane proteins of the inner membrane of the mitochondria is the ATP synthase. Protons are usually pumped to the intermembrane space of the mitochondria. This potential energy is harnessed by the ATP synthase (as the protons flow back to the matrix ) to create ATP. If the inner membrane did not have such as large surface area, they would be fewer ATP synthases and the mitochondria would be less efficient in tapping proton motive force to create ATPs.
A person with such mitochondria would easily get tired from physical activities because they are fewer ATPs to power the muscles and cells' activities especially when energy is highly demanded.
