Mendel's dihybrid experiment showed that the F₁ double heterozygote always showed independent assortment of the two pairs of gene at the time of Gamete formation.
This was justified only if the genes were located on different chromosome.
But if the genes were located on the same chromosome , they were inherited together and are said to be linked genes.
