Stay put, especially if you are injured or near exhaustion. If you need to spend the night in the woods, stay warm and keep yourself hydrated. Set up camp in the open, so rescuers will be able to see you. Use a signaling device, such as a mirror, a brightly colored pack, or make patterns in the snow. If you build a fire, be aware of area fire restrictions. Many forest fires have been started by lost hikers or hunters.
