The differences between Richter scale and the modified scale are as follows:
RICHTER SCALE:
- The Richter scale is used to determine or measure the magnitude of the earth quake by measuring the seismic waves.
- The scale has a logarithmic measurement
.
- The calculation is done in logarithm form from base-10 which is based on the amplitudes of the waves.
MODIFIED/MERCALLI SCALE:
- The modified or Mercalli scale is used to determine or measure the intensity of the earthquake by the observed effects
.
- The scale has a linear measurement.
- The calculation is quantified which is based on the observation of the earthquake's effects on the earth.
The bellow are the similarities between Richter scale and the modified scale:
- Both Richter and Modified scale is a tool used for measuring some factors in an earthquake.
- Both are measured but it has a specified range.
