The graphic designer may need to protect his logo designs, that would require him/her to acquire a patent or a copyright to stop other people from using or claiming ownership of his/her designs.

The designer also needs to know about intellectual rights in order to avoid infringing on fellow designers intellectual rights such as patents,copyrights and trademarks which can lead to costly civil or even criminal cases.
