In 1924, Congress rewarded veterans of world war 1 with certificates that were to be  redeemed in 1945 for $1,000 each. By 1932, many of these former servicemen had lost their jobs and they asked Congress to redeem their bonus certificates before 1945. Led by Walter Waters of Oregon, the  Bonus Army walked to Washington with their families in June 1932 and they camped out in homemade shantytowns. President Hoover refused to address them but they found an audience with a congressional delegation. later a debate began in Congress over whether to meet the demonstrators' demands but the US Senate rejected it.on July 28, President Hoover administration sent in the army and police to expel the marchers from Washington.
