Cities built plumbing and sewer systems, and made a better effort to improve public health. Scientists also created cures and vaccines to rid of any diseases caused by germs.
The germ theory was truly a revolution in and of itself. It revolutionized the concept of plumbing and sewers, so people were just dumping garbage or feces into the streets. It also made living conditions in cities and slums much cleaner, which in turn made it made it much safer. The concept of staying clean and keeping produce and meats fresh made people less susceptible to being infected with diseases associated with germy hands or spoiled meat.
