The Olmec produced an abundance of basalt boulders mined from the Sierra de los Tuxtlas mountains of Veracruz. Since basalt was readily available to them, the Olmec used this material to create one of history's most interesting archaeological finds - the Olmec colossal heads. These iconic statues have been one of the lasting legacies of the Olmec civilization.
