In a negative feedback loop, the relationship between a response and the original stimulus is that: The response counteracts the original stimulus.

A feedback loop can be defined as a biological process in which the output of a system amplifies or inhibits the system, depending on the surrounding conditions.

Generally, a feedback loop helps to regulate or maintain the amount of hormones secreted (released) in the body of a living organism.

Basically, there are two (2) main types of feedback loop and these include:

  • Positive feedback loop: it affirms (increases) the response by the body system.
  • Negative feedback loop: it inhibits (decreases) the response by the body system.

Hence, the response in a negative feedback loop counteracts or impedes the original stimulus, so as to change the direction of the stimulus or preventing it from continuing.

In conclusion, an example of a negative feedback loop is sweating during a physical exercise, so as to cool down.
