My favorite form is the checkerboard pattern. It reminds me of when I used to play checkers and chess with my parents. My eye first goes to the dark squares because they look almost 3-D. The light falls onto the forms from a the side, casting what looks like a shadow and causing a 3-D effect. The light and dark areas also add to this 3-D effect by adding a sense of depth to the shapes.
