On the happy occasion of accepting the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, the winner said: 'I must ask why this prize is awarded to a movement which is beleaguered and committed to unrelenting struggle; to a movement which has not won the very peace and brotherhood which is the essence of the Nobel Prize'. Who was this champion of equal rights for all citizens in his native country?

Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize of 1964, Martin Luther King Jr. was a great orator, civil rights activist and a minister in a Baptist church. He is most famously known for his civil rights movements with the use of non violence and civil disobedience, inspired by the works of the great Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi.

Martin Luther King Jr. gained prominence for his oppositional stand against the prejudiced and biased treatment of his people, the blacks, by the whites in America. He began organizing protests and oppositions from 1955 till his ultimate assassination in 1968. He led numerous non violent movements across Alabama first, which then spread to other parts of the nation. On October, 1964, he was selected for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize which give awards to persons of great influence for the peace in the world. In his acceptance speech, he emphasized the need to maintain a peaceful co-existence at the same time, working towards a better society. But this wasn't the only point he made. He reiterate the fact that even though this award was given for peace, he points the irony in that the movement he's been making/having hasn't been accepted. The movement for peace has been rejected, laving his people still oppressed and without peace in their lives. He emphasized the need for equality of rights for all the citizens of his native country.
