Imagine that you are looking at a geometric drawing. At first, one shape in this drawing seems to be in front of other shapes. The next moment, this same shape seems to be located behind a second shape. This phenomenon is called:

a) Depth perception.
b) An illusory contour.
c) An ambiguous figure-ground relationship.
d) Holistic recognition.

This is a Gestalt principle that is applied for most of the space figure-ground. Everything in the design will be seen as one or other and the relationship between them is mutually exclusive. Neither one has perceived except f another relation. The changing is not possible without changing others. They both are interdependent and complementary to each other. The figure-ground relation can enhance and detract from each other and organized the two as these are in relationships that are the most important aspects of the figure-ground relation. It sets a context for how your design communicates and can be interpreted. It is visual perception. A form is always seen in the relation of the ground. For example a letter to a page, a building with its site, etc. A black shape on the black background not visible, without separation and contrast the forms are not visible.
