In May 2009, it did not look as if Skippy, a baby kangaroo at the Global Wildlife Center, would have anyone to care for him. Workers at the center in Louisiana found the joey, as young kangaroos are called, on the ground inside a kangaroo enclosure where about 40 kangaroos dwell. Apparently, Skippy's mother had rejected him. He was about four months old and utterly helpless. Christina Cooper, one of the reserve's two veterinary specialists, waited nervously for 90 minutes, hoping the joey's mother would pick him up again.
