Roland is one of the main characters of The Song of Roland. This is a poem about the kingdom of Charlemagne (8th and 9th century) and, principally, about the war between Christians and Muslims. Roland is considered to be a great warrior and an excellent knight, which was of great importance back then. Apart from that, he is was one of the favorite relatives of the great emperor. We also get to know that he seemed to be very brave and ambitious. The reason he doesn't sound the olifant for help is because he didn't want the others to think he was a coward or useless. His feeling of pride and heroism didn't allow him to ask for help and disappoint the king.
