Mechanical waves travel through a medium as they required a medium to propagate.

How do you explain the type of wave travels through a medium?

The waves can be categorized into two types, electromagnetic waves and mechanical waves.

The waves which are capable to transmit their energy through a vacuum are called electromagnetic waves. These waves are results of vibration produced by charged particles and they can propagate in a vacuum.

A mechanical wave is a wave that is not capable of transmitting its energy through a vacuum as it required a medium to propagate.

Some examples of mechanical waves are sound waves and P & S waves of earthquakes. It means that there is a medium required to travel the mechanical waves.
