The Great Society programs were domestic programs created by Pres. Lynndon Johnson with the hopes of eliminating poverty and racism in the US. These programs focused on education, healthcare,urban problems, rural poverty and many more. The programs however were cut down after US had spend a large amount of money during the Vietnam War.

Usually, great society programs get cut back after there is a period of recession - this generally happens following a war or something else which has similar economic consequences. When these things happen, there are generally also detrimental effects on society.
