The answer that demonstrates not active listening would be C. "Sorry, I was distracted. Could you repeat ____?" The reason is A is how I (the person listening) actively interpreted what you were saying to me and I am reiterating to you how I understood it for clarification. This makes sure we are both clear about what we are discussing. B is asking for clarification on a specific statement. This shows active listening. I heard you and I did not understand exactly what you meant, felt or thought and I want to so I am asking you for further information. D also shows active listening by sympathizing with the person. By saying "I guess you must have felt____" a certain way in relation to whatever specific situation you expressed I am showing that I heard you, I listened, and I am understanding how you felt and sympathize that it could have been ecstatic for good news or sad for bad news and any which way between.
