what is the function of a cell's selectively permeable plasma membrane

Respuesta :

The function of the semi permeable membrane is to allow substances to diffuse (transport) across it, because its only semi permeable the substance are able to cross. If it was a non permeable membrane it wouldn't allow the transport of substances.

The plasma membrane is a semi-permeable membrane that allows the movement of a molecule from inside to outside of the cell and vice versa.

Further Explanation:

The plasma membrane is mainly composed of cholesterol, protein, and phospholipids. They move easily in the membrane and maintain the fluid nature of a membrane. The main component of the plasma membrane is phospholipids that are made up of fatty acid, phosphate, and glycerol. These phospholipids make two layers of phospholipids that are mainly known as the lipid bilayer. This bilayer makes the plasma membrane semi-permeable and helps in the transport of molecules from inside to outside and vice versa.

Other components of the lipid bilayer are carbohydrates and protein. They also play a major role in the plasma membrane because they help in cell signaling. Glycolipids are present on the outer side of the cell membrane. The membrane of the cell also plays a significant role in protecting the cell from the exterior environment and acts as a barrier.
