A continental shelf is an area that is at the margin or edge of the continent and is underlined by the ocean and is an extension of the coastline to the drip of the point that is called the shelf break and this break descent down to the ocean and is called as the continental slope.
So if the edges of the continental shelves tend to collide like that of the California and the pacific oceans or that of the two continental plates then the landmass would experiences some changes as these would buckle up and then double themselves as they are build of the sediment and would probably lead to creation of a land bridge.
