T-cell lymphocytes are involved in cell mediated immunity. When a pathogen enters the body its is engulfed by an antigen presenting cell (APC) like macrophage or dendritic cell which breaks it down into smaller antigenic fragments. The APCs present these antigens with the help of Major Histocompatibility Complexes (MHCs) on their surface. When a T cell comes in contact with these APCs, it gets activated to either cytotoxic T cell (Tc) or helper T cell ( Th). Tc are responsible for triggering apoptosis to destroy the pathogen infected cell directly. Th release cytokines and stimulate more Tc cells.They also stimulate other immune system cells like Natural Killer cells.
