Explanation:

The disengagement theory states that withdrawal from social activities in old age is a normal process associated with aging.

This theory was formulated in 1961 and it was the first theory of aging developed by social scientists.

Disengagement in old age happens not only due to declining physical fitness. This could be avoided by associating with people of similar age group, where such problems are common. The biggest challenge is the mental one: older people don't feel needed, the fear they are of no use to society and they are afraid of learning new skills. They prefer to be on their own because this way they feel safe, they don't need to explain anything to anybody and nobody criticizes them.
