How did Alexis de Tocqueville react to his visit to the United States? What impressed and what worried him?

Respuesta :

Tocqueville was a believer that equality was the great political and social idea of his era and when he went to the United States he noticed that the country offered the most advanced example of equality in action. He admired that America provided a stable economy.

He also was worried that the level of individualism in America could transform individuals into atomized that would be “lost in the crowd”. He also was worried that a society of individuals could lead to the tyranny of the majority, in which individual rights were compromised. He also pointed out how this nation could at the same time defend freedom and mistreat native Americans and slavery.
