For example, "She is lionhearted; they fought to the bitter end." would be a metaphor. A simile on the other hand is almost the same as a metaphor, but it uses the words "like" and "as" to compare things. For example, "She is as brave as a lion; they fight like cats and dogs!" would be a simile.
