If the father of Jem and Scout (Atticus) was not courageous, then he wouldn't have chosen to defend Tom Robinson in court. Since Atticus took the case, he was able to teach his kids some very valuable life lessons. Atticus teaches his children that it is better to stick up for what you know is wrong than to ignore it. Jem and scout start showing courage by being braver. One example is how Scout attends court with Tom Robinson. Many of Jem's and Scout's "acts of courage" come from small things.
