The base of the food chain in the waters around Antarctica are phytoplankton, a tiny speck-sized plants floating in the currents. They are single cells and make energy through photosynthesis. We can see a wide variety of types of phytoplankton such as diatoms, of which there are around 100 known species. in addition to this, the unique and short food chain in Antarctica is often based on krill which is vital for all the animals living there.
