The advancement of human communication technology has led to the rise of social media use. Social media can play a large role in human rights, for better or for worse.

Instances of social media harassment and/or bullying by unseen, and known or unknown, faces have risen along with instances of highlighted through photos and videos of human rights violation through lack of resources, hate crimes, violence, trafficking, and/or exploitation being brought to global attention by perpetrators and activists alike.

These highlights have led to emotional and mental damage for the victims, as well as volunteers and activists reaching out to assist those in need.

Social media can be a tool used to help or harm depending on the situation and some feel that there is a strong need for regulation and law to keep control and dole out responsibility in harmful situations regardless of freedom of speech/press/media.

The role of social media in the violation of human rights is as follows:

  • Social media has been weaponized to spread disinformation, interfere in elections, and promote and incite violence.
  • According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has the right to privacy.
  • When content posted on social media pose danger to society, the need to regulate arises, and the responsibility of people, as well as those posting it, becomes important.
  • While the document was not written when computers were around, it applies to every user on every social media network.
  • physical violence, intimidation, sexual harassment or assault, and being physically excluded or removed from establishments or businesses are the main rights that are violated.

Hence, social media plays a role in the violation of Human rights.
