Ozone is formed when an individual oxygen atom combines with an oxygen molecule.

Answer:

Ozone is usually defined as a highly responsive gas that is comprised of three atoms of oxygen and is denoted by O₃. It usually occurs in the form of a layer that occurs in both the layer of the troposphere and the stratosphere.

In the layer of the stratosphere, the ozone is formed by undergoing two simple processes-

  • Initially, one oxygen (O₂) molecule present in the atmosphere is split up into two individual oxygen (2 O) atoms, by the incoming solar radiation from the sun.
  • Next, each of these individually occurring highly reactive atoms is then combined with another oxygen  molecule, and thereby produces the ozone gas.

In the layer of the stratosphere, this ozone gas is formed by undergoing various types of chemical reactions. It is originated from both natural and human activities.

Thus, this ozone protects lives on earth from the harmful ultraviolet solar radiation.
