Pope Gregory have only sent two uneducated friars with the Polo family instead of the one hundred Christian scholars requested by Kublai Khan because of Gregory’s status as a pope elected through a compromise and the danger of the journey to Khan’s territory.
Pope Gregory X was not the first choice for Pope and was chosen after the longest election in history of the Catholic Church. He probably did not want to lose support or cause dissent with other European leaders.
