The labor movement was more successful in the North and West because it was much more industrialized and urbanized. In the south, there were still laws, such as Jim Crow laws, which tied down blacks from opportunities that were available to the North, and blacks made up a significant percent of the population in the South. Although in the North and West was more industrialized, business owners became corrupt, taking away some privileges, such as the right to join a Labor Union. Industrial business owners used their employees for their own profit. People we so desperate they would work for anything, even they could barely afford food with it. Especially in Company towns where the business owner could freely raise prices of goods in the store and raise rent/mortgage prices, while lowering workers wages'.
